When Growing Up Feels Overwhelming
The teenage years are a time of enormous change. Young people are discovering who they are while managing academic expectations, friendships, family relationships, and an increasingly connected digital world.
While adolescence can be exciting, it can also feel confusing and overwhelming.
Stress Can Look Different for Every Teenager
Teenagers may experience stress for many reasons, including:
Academic expectations and examinations
Friendships and social acceptance
Changes in family relationships
Uncertainty about the future
Social media and comparison
Pressure to meet expectations
Not every teenager will openly say, “I am stressed.” Some may become quiet, irritable, distracted, or withdrawn. Others may continue appearing perfectly fine while struggling internally.
This is why open and non-judgmental communication is so important.
Listening Creates Connection
When teenagers share their concerns, adults often feel the urge to immediately solve the problem. While guidance can be valuable, listening is often the first step.
Instead of asking only, “Why did you do that?”, we can ask:
“How are you feeling about this?”
“Would you like to talk about what happened?”
“What kind of support would help you right now?”
These conversations show young people that their experiences matter.
Building Healthy Coping Skills
Teenagers can benefit from learning practical ways to manage everyday stress. These may include:
Maintaining healthy routines
Taking breaks from constant digital engagement
Physical activity and creative expression
Mindfulness and relaxation practices
Talking to trusted adults
Learning to recognise and communicate emotions
There is no single solution that works for everyone. The goal is to help teenagers discover healthy strategies that work for them.
MYTHRI's Approach
At MYTHRI, we believe teenagers deserve a space where they can explore their thoughts and emotions without fear of judgment. Our wellbeing programmes are designed to support self-awareness, confidence, emotional resilience, and healthy coping skills.
Supporting teenagers is not about telling them who they should become. It is about helping them feel confident as they discover who they are.
A teenager who feels heard today may become an adult who is better able to understand and care for themselves tomorrow.
